The Internet Wayback Machine

Recently DetectiveMask and I were chatting in the MF chatroom. We were discussing my earliest matches - that date to the late 1990s and early 2000s. I explained that those encounters were in Japan during the early years of the internet and that a small number of those battles made it onto a blog for the Japanese wrestling video company called WrestleFactory (aka PAPW).

Imagine my surprise when he sent me links to images of some of those matches - curated via of the Internet Wayback Machine.

I hadn't seen the images in over 20 years! A profound feeling of nostalgia and longing swept over me.

It made me wonder.....Do you keep videos of your matches?
What is the oldest video/photo you have of yourself wrestling?

I have videos of some of my matches dating back 15 yrs. Some of the guys are still on Meetfighters and the other site GF AND WM.

I've never taken a photo of my only wrestling match as an adult, but I do hope a day will come when I can give a better answer to that question.

And it's a thrill to see your old matches in your gallery. I'm glad to have helped out in that.

I'm sure that for some people, the idea of recording a match probably seems absurd.

But I can imagine at least 3 scenarios for why it might not be:

1. If you are serious wrestler for sport and looking to improve, video feedback helps you see where you "lost the match" by identifying the exact moment where you overpowered.
2. For pro style or fantasy style, it might also help you see how well you execute various holds.
3. If you are getting some hormonal satisfaction from wrestling, a video allows one to better recall the excitement.

I agree on all three of your scenarios, For me I show them to the new guys to see that they did have a match and to also see where to improve......I give them a copy, but never post the video.

Trust between you and your opponent is probably the most important aspect of allowing one to film or be filmed. iPhones and Androids are now essentially full-on recording studios and privacy is a luxury.

I remember wayback then. We used to chat about wrestling when you were in Japan. I record most of my matches unless the other person objects. My earliest tape is from 1997 I believe. Y
