The YMCA when I was a kid had an "adult" mens locker room in the basement. I wasn't allowed but the old men took me under there wing and I became welcome after a while. It was not well lit and was like a maze. of different rooms. One had mats and if there were a couple of guys staring as lookout the old men would wrestle like this. They usually started in shorts or underwear and would rip/strip each other during the match. It didn't seem gay, to me those muscle bulls were the ultimate in alpha dominant masculinity.
