Why not kimono (gi)?

Beggars can't be fussy. I'll go for it either way, or in any other garments including street clothes, business suit, rip 'n strip, Speedo. Just do it.

Here in Brazil (bjj's motherland), meetfithers' don't like to use gi in private matches. It is so hard to me, because I don't like no gi. But it is ok... I'm waiting :)

I just wish I could find some guys who would be willing to do some gi work with me; so I could become more proficient in the various martial arts without having to pay and arm and a leg at the local schools. Even gi wrestling I find hot, if anyone is into that. Just about everyone local who lists a gi sport in their profile either provides no response, say I'm too old for this, I don't turn them on sexually hence no interest, or admit they don't actually do the gi sports.

Thanks. Seems like the European guys who have martial arts in their interests are for real; while over here it seems sex appeal is the main criterion [when it comes to getting together] for landing any kind of training or competition. Could be that here the serious gi-sport guys in the USA have given up on using the Internet for the real thing.

Even with ordinary wrestling, if I take on a new guy seeking to learn who has never had experience in falling, taking and breaking falls, I prefer donning gi – so much easier to control the direction, pattern, and intensity of a takedown, a throw, even a wall slam. Makes for a much safer experience, and helps the guy ease into things.

A guy's first few (more than a few) falls can be a literally panic inducing thing for many guys – Gi work eases them into the whole experience and make the difference between the guy panicing out of the scene entirely and his wanting to continue deeper into wrestling, grappling, getting really rough.

I think it goes down to personal preference. My BJJ school has both and I go to classes for both but I do prefer no-gi a lot more. This may be because it is more similar to folkstyle which I did in college. Chris does have a valid point about training in gi being more useful in most climates (even here in Lost Wages, it is cold from November through March) in regard to self defense and I did here that also mentioned by a black belt who ran a school in Michigan as well, but I still prefer no gi as I can it quite enjoyable and easier to understand, but as mentioned above I do both regularly (Sunday thru Friday the first 6 days of the week) unless sick, injured, or an appointment get sin the way.One branch of my BJJ school has both the same night back to back thus it's a matter of personal choice The important thing is that you are getting mat time, improving, having fun, bettering your body whether it be with or without the gi. Thanks

for me, in a gi you just have more possiblities... thats 4 me technically more challenging...if u do gi competitions, its advisable 2 take some no gi classes too, it enhances your gi competitionstyle

I think it is important. I prefer to fight in a gi... It is better for me and hottiest :)

Fighters have this weird notion that the gi doesn't represent real life situations and in nudist colonies and beaches they have a great point. The difference between a gi and clothes is that a gi will stand up to you choking people with it over and over again whereas a t-shirt will not.

I started off in singlets meeting people on the net, then I started BJJ and got dependent on the gi to the point that I was intimidated sparring no gi. Then I moved to the other side of the country and my schedule only allowed me to attend mostly no-gi classes and I had to get good no gi. I think doing both really is the only legit way to go.

I am judoka and I only fight with gi, I use it a lot during the combat and I dont like no gi. In martial arts the gi is necessary but I understand another styles, but ussually I only fight with another judokas, bjjers or gi grapplers. Nothing is better for me than apply a gi choke to my opponent.

I can understand that a gi can identify a combat style being a martial art just like amature wrestling has its leotard or boxing its satin shorts but, does it matter where what feels comfortable or as you mentioned HOT, but its like choosing a book by its cover, dont just choose the fight by its gi..

What is the reason most fighters don't like matchs with kimono (gi)? I love it!
This shows that the match is a martial art too, not just a fight. I think it is powerful and hot.
If you like, comment too.
