My good friend justforfun01 I would say, “toughen up butter up” because a bruised rib is no laughing matter and can take weeks/months to heal, IF YOU DON’T REinjure IT. So heal up before our match so I don’t have to go easy on you. Thank you.

From what you described and told me before I think you may have fractured a rib. If that's the case it can take awhile to heal. I don't think you should be wrestling again until it's totally healed or you are cleared by a physician.

I feel like I walk away with a minor injury after every match. The last few times in particular I’ve had the same problem - the other guy is mounted on top of me, I’m on the ground on my back, and I feel a “pop” in my rib cage. I don’t know what the specific injury is (I assumed some sort of muscle strain?) but it’s super sore for the next several weeks and I can’t put weight on it/move properly.

I don’t know if it’s because I’m just small/weak, because covid restricted my gym access and whatever chest muscles I have are gone, or because I tend to gravitate toward fighting bigger, more skilled guys... all I know is I’m too young to be this breakable!

Anyone have any suggestions as to how to prevent this? (Besides bulking up since I feel like that is never going to happen 😂)

Actually, it sounds most like you dislocated a rib. They sit in a cartilage seat without much of a permanent attachment. It is painful and tends to also result in some local muscle trauma....

Could as well have either strained or put into spasm some of the deep muscles (not the superficial or large surface ones we see).

Anyway its all speculation. My experience as an OLD guy who still plays lots of sports, wrestles, and lifts is that warm up adn stretching are insanely important. And for me simple stretching does little – i need to ally get it aggressively stretched out and warm - typically by lots of exercise - starting light and building to a crescendo. Once truly warm, i seem to be mostly immune. While cold i can tweek nearly anything. The older i get the more important it gets.

As Dogfighter said, now that you've gone and done it, best to let it heal. If its a pull or dislocation, leave it alone. If its a spasm, deep massage can help. Its like the old wag about colds - treated aggressively they can be gone within 7 days 0- but left un treated they may hang around for a week.

I have a similar injury from some spirited BJJ training. Its not your size etc. You have proably damaged the cartlidge around a rib. It's really painful I know.

Look up thoracic exercises on youtube. Its what the physio has me doing. This guy has a few videos.

Good luck.
